THE FRICTION

A billing alert reports a higher cost. The next step is less clear: identify the service owner, compare the change with deployments or usage, and decide whether the increase is expected.

THE PRODUCT WE’RE EXPLORING

SpendTrace, in three parts.

SpendTrace would organize the investigation after a cost signal arrives. It would keep the data freshness, owner, candidate explanation, and reviewed action together.

Three planned capabilities we want to validate with early users.

01 / PLANNED

Make freshness visible

Planned cost records would show the billing period and available-data timestamp so delayed data is not mistaken for live usage.

02 / PLANNED

Find an accountable owner

Proposed service mappings would route a cost change to someone who can explain the workload.

03 / PLANNED

Close with a decision

Planned investigation notes would distinguish expected growth, a correction task, and an unresolved question.

AN INTENDED WORKFLOW

A clearer next step.
Less work around it.

A focused approach for founders and engineering leads who investigate unexpected cloud spending.

  1. 01

    Choose a limited billing source

A future pilot would start with one provider and read-only billing access or an approved export.

  2. 02

    Investigate the change

Compare the affected service and period with permitted deployment notes and usage context.

  3. 03

    Record the next step

Have a person approve any operational action, then review later billing data to check the result.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Is billing monitoring active now?

No. SpendTrace is a waitlist. It does not connect cloud accounts, monitor costs, or send alerts today.

Will it reduce my bill automatically?

No. Savings are not guaranteed. The proposed workflow would support investigation and human decisions, without shutting down resources or changing commitments automatically.

Will cost data be real time?

Not necessarily. Provider billing feeds and anomaly systems have delays. A pilot would state its source coverage, update frequency, and known limitations.
